Maybe . . . you should push a 2d illustrative style, emphasizing strong line, and texture- OH! I see thatch texture inthere, you figured thatone out , but yea, push the strong points and the rest will follow. Everyone has a different eye because our brains all sense our visual field differently. Some people may have less reception on line and seeing things in terms of line while others see things as voluminous shapes or masses. Some people see the play of light first and start with that and then pull the details from the haze. But for you? Line, High contrast, hatching, stippling, gestalt, those are your strong points. That said, What would have made a piece like this better is negative space, a place for the eye to rest or pass over easily. Negative space can also help you to define edges of characters of depth of field even if you are using flat textureing to tell the story. Glad you had fun with this one, those are the best.
